This fireworks display was in celebration of Victoria Day. A Canadian (and I assume other countries in the Commonwealth as well) holiday celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria (who's been dead for well over a century now). Of course, the holiday doesn't always fall on her birthday, as it's been decreed that the day will take place on the third Monday of May. It's kind of a bunk holiday, except that it gives us the May long weekend! Ask any Canadian about the May long weekend, and they will be pleased to explain the goings-on to you. :-)

It's generally a wonderful time. It's when most of the campgrounds in the provincial and national parks open, so that leads to a lot of drunken camping. It essentially marks the unofficial beginning of summer, so there'e general drunkenness and frolicking about outside.
